This is possibly the best book about American Musical Theater I have ever read. Sam Wasson manages to pull off a literary pas de deux writing exactly like Bob Fosse danced and choreographed. Reading this book is like watching a Fosse show. Wassen slides, glides and shuffles through this story of a tortured and talented man. From the curious detachment of his parents while he endured sexual abuse as a young man to the utter disregard for his various heath issues Fosse changed American musical Theater and danced it into the 20th century. Somehow he partnered with his demons to create brilliant theater. His relationship with Gwen Verdun is the stuff of theatrical legend. She was his lover, wife, muse and friend who understood him in spite of him.In addition to finding Fosse's life fascinating, I was awed by Sam Wasson's writing. His sentence crafting employs the same genius and quirky energy that Bob Fosse's dances did. Somehow he manages to tell the story, warts and all, without resorting to tawdry tales that usually inform these biographies. And Bob Fosse definitely had some tawdry! If you love and miss the Golden age of American Musical theater read this book .
A wonderfully researched and compelling biography of an incredibly complex showman. Bob Fosse revolutionized modern musical theater and was the perfect example of the bright light who burned too hot. This biography effectively goes into Fosse's head and fully reveals why he was such a perfectionist, control freak and self destructive madman. His friendship with Paddy Chayefsky was absolutely fascinating as was his relationships with all the NY showbiz Illuminati, some who were friends and many who were competitors. The author does an excellent job centering the story around Fosse's death with each chapter counting down the years toward his final embrace with Angelique, his angel of death.A bonus is great insight into the lives of the main women in his life (other than his mother) Gwen Verdon, Anne Reinking and of course, the intensely influential burlesque strippers of his showbiz youth.Great, highly readable biography. Highly recommended
This is the best biography I have ever read. The subject, Bob Fosse, is covered completely and objectively. The research is exhaustive and presented in quotes of persons giving information and not by annotation. Facts are substantiated in an appendix. The writing is so good I thought I was reading a novel. Even though the ending is known and permanent I kept hoping Fosse could be cured of his various multiple addictions. A must Book for Fosse, American musical, theater and show biz fans.
A Great read about a seminal figure in the popular cultue of the 20th Century --- a brilliant but completely neurotic ego-maniac with no impulse control. But what a brilliant dancer, choreographer, director, film-maker & bon-vivant whose personal demons were responsible for his early death. It helped me understand my own personal obsessions as a visual artist, and the book's melancholy tale of the theatre world stays with me even now.Alas, he considered himself a complete fraud and an artistic failure, even when he became a legend of Theatre, Dance & Film.
This seemed to be a "definitive" biography of Mr. Fosse. It was brilliantly written, providing insight and information that came from an exhaustive interview process with many of the key players in his life. I really felt like the author succeeded in painting an accurate portrayal of a difficult, neurotic, enraging, brilliant, unique man ... in a way that still made you feel protective toward him. A great feat. I don't usually review books, but felt compelled to do so if it results in even one more person reading this. Enjoy!
An excellent book for fans of Fosse, yes, but also for a chance to look inside the life and mind of a man who had a huge influence on stage and film that is still viable today. Learning about Fosse's relationships with family, friends, wives, lovers and his dancers is enlightening every step of the way.I think Fosse was a genius and the book gives excellent and intimate insight into how he got there. If you get a chance, check out youtube for video clips of Fosse dancing in his earlier career and then watch clips from dance numbers he choreographed for movies and Broadway. Wow!An added bonus is a look at the history of vaudeville, Broadway and films and how they all evolved and are intertwined. The size of the book should not deter you at all. Every page is like Fosse, going from deep despair to over the top "razzle dazzle"! Show Biz at it's best and worst. Highly, highly recommend!
Detailed narrative on Fosse's incredible rise and eventual set-backs. An inside look at insecurities, bad habits, destructive behavior, love affairs, perfectionism and genius. Especially interesting - inside info. on musicals and films. Overall, an in-depth view of a complex workaholic who was never satisfied and couldn't enjoy his success. Author did his homework.
There have been other books about Fosse but this is one that really defines him and his life in the theater. It's about 800 pages long and pretty well profiles an era of musical comedies during two decades---at least those that were impacted by Bob Fosse. I lived through that period of the 60's and 70's: a period with shows by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Kander and Ebb and a host of other creative geniuses. Fosse came from a difficult childhood spent in vaudeville and burlesque, areas that impacted him enough to create an obsessive choreographer and then director who could only accept perfection in his dancers and actors. Mr. Wasson explores and linearly goes through the creative efforts of Fosse and his impact on producers, writers and composers. Equally vivid is his sexual demands made on quite a few cast members. His marriage to Gwen Verdon and his creation of choreography for her over the years made her into a star. A complicated genius with terrific drive and a short life.
