Yes, there will be some squirming when you read the book, but also guaranteed chuckles. And the face on the cover? A creature that slithers and keeps resurfacing throughout the book in the most unusual ways. But since the author is Carl Hiaasen - know the humor is coming. It starts almost instantly. Billy is a mischievous middle schooler who always looks out for the underdog and finds crazy ways to do it. He hasn’t seen his father in many years and wonders why his dad sends checks every month, but that’s it. No birthday cards, no phone calls. But…Billy’s persistent. So, in between causing bullies to squirm and taking care of his pet snakes, he searches for his dad, partners with a new Native American friend (she’s of the Crow tribe and pretty savvy), deals with spy drones, encounters grizzly bears, and gets into danger as he helps track down a pretty devious poacher of the worst kind. This book is for both boys AND girls who want laughs, suspense, and to protect nature’s endangered animals. Upper elementary and middle schoolers will like this book and probably won’t want to put it down.
Squirm is the latest of Carl Hiaasen's series of young adult novels with one-word titles. Hoot, Scat, Flush, Chomp, Skink, and now Squirm. Every one of these books I've read, and every one of his adult novels I've managed to read, is infused with an intense love for nature. In Squirm, Hiaasen takes that love to a new level. The book is virtually a naturalist's tour of Montana.Hiaasen's protagonist this time around is 13-year-old Billy Audubon Dickens. Billy loves snakes. His mother moves him and his sister around because she "has a weird rule: We've got to live near a bald eagle nest, and by 'near,' my mother means fifteen minutes max. She's totally obsessed with these birds." Billy's father, Dennis Dickens, is nowhere to be found. He left the family many years ago to take up a mysterious job about which he will say absolutely nothing. But Billy is a resourceful kid. He's determined to find a way to find the old man and learn his secret.Billy's odyssey takes him from Fort Pierce, Florida to Livingston, Montana, a tiny town 30 miles from Bozeman. There he finds his dad's new family but no dad. Dennis is out on a mission, allegedly for a government agency. Whatever his job is, it involves drones. Dennis is living with an Apsalooka (Crow) Indian woman named Little Thunder-Sky and her 14-year-old daughter, Summer Chasing-Hawks. The mother, known as Lil, is a river guide for visiting fishermen. And you just know that, whatever Dennis is doing, it involves nature as well. So you quickly figure out where this is going even if the mystery continues.Squirm is a worthy addition to Hiaasen's growing body of young adult novels. It's not nearly as funny as are most of his novels for grown-ups, but it's infused with the same reverence for the natural world and a gentle way with the characters.
SQUIRM is another great read from Newbery Medal winning author, Carl Hiaasen. This book is not one of his adult offerings. Subjects and characters are geared to upper elementary-aged students and above.Carl Hiaasen’s titles have a wonderful sense of place; quirky, very detailed, likable characters; dysfunctional family (and civic) situations; ecological themes; and tongue-in-cheek comedic circumstances. In SQUIRM, I especially liked the descriptions of Montana; the fly-fishing; river travel and the eagles. I’m afraid that I am still not fond of snakes.I am a huge fan of Carl Hiaasen. I would read table saw ads if he wrote them. His adult books have sent me into wild spasms of laughter. He is an excellent, excellent author. Please check out all his tiles - for adults and kids.
Book has a great story line, but around chapter 6, it includes a conversation between the characters that discussss how the tooth fairy is either your mom or your dad! Lots of swearing for a kids’ chapter book as well. It’s too bad too because my 10 year old enjoys this author as much as I do, but I had to do some fancy word work around the tooth fairy conversation! I replace the cuss words as well when reading this aloud to him. These problems could have been easily avoided with some other language and topic choices.
A twist of writing from Mr. Hiassen that’s not limited to the crazy state of Florida.A family book with the same delicious cutting commentary and love that Hiassen has for nature and his state of Florida.Even better, we’re introduced to another beautiful state called Montana that would be better off without humans that defile nature.
With an opening that is bound to hook any guy or nature loving gal, this is a hilarious, yet serious topic. If there were more people like Billy there would be far less bullying not only in our schools, but among some self-indulging adults as well. Hiaasen's YA books have yet to disappoint me. Love the connection to our environment!
Another great read from Hiaasen. Some of his books are wickedly funny. This one has humor but is a departure from most of his previous books. All are spectacularly well written and a pleasure to read.
I know this is only one man's opinion so if you enjoy Hiaasen by all means read his books. I personally find his writing like ocean waves. Up and down. I have read a couple of his books I really enjoys and then I find 2 or 3 in a row I cannot finish. I've quit reading him altogether.
