Mike Gibney, the director of the Institute of Food and Health at University College Dublin, has written a brief book on the broad subject of the wholesomeness of the modern food chain and its effects on and inside the consumer. He sees food as a deeply important part of all cultures with heavy personal and political trimmings. His view of it all is from science, with prejudice.Setting the stage, he writes: "Our relationship with our food is directly related to wealth. Those who struggle to find enough food to eat care little about any attribute other than its ability to sustain survival. At the opposite end of the spectrum where wealth abounds, we can get fussy about food." And we do, to the extremes where mistrust of agri-food science leads to a widespread fear of the modern food supply. He has little time for the anti-science and eco-fundamentalist foodies and agricultural romanticists.Most popular media food issues are shot down when placed under the microscope of food science. He states, for example, that the only difference between synthetic and natural chemicals in food is that synthetic chemicals are subject to intensive testing while natural plant chemicals are not. In today's highly regulated world of food, there is zero risk to consumers from permitted food chemicals. He comes down hard against the organic food industry and the international anti-GM lobby as largely devoid of science and where "the villain is the food industry, always." On obesity, he states that genes certainly play a role as do "every food category." He laments the lack of political support by the suits in Washington and Europe for scientific agricultural investments in countries where malnutrition is wide spread. He says that in Africa, for example, the percentage of land irrigated is one-tenth that of Asia, at 4%. He concludes with the lamentation that food and health will always remain hot topics that attract an undue share of writers and opinion formers who have narrow agendas or a somewhat unscientific approach to the issues.

I bought this book hoping that it would help me clarify my thoughts on such issues as GMO and the organic movement. Mr. Gibney provided that and more. I was not aware of many of the issues related to nutrition that are plaguing developing nations, and how intertwined GMO science and organic farming are with nutrition throughout the world. I was hoping that I would gain some specific facts that I could use in discussions with local opponents of GMO/proponents of organic and/or local food. While the facts are there, I also now understand that most of those with whom I might have discussions do not want facts or science - they are food fundamentalists. It is much like a religion, where their beliefs will not be swayed. That's OK - they're entitled to their beliefs. But I don't have to subscribe to those beliefs, and now I understand better why I do not.Well worth reading!

This book is a thorough analysis of food and nutrition. Among many subjects the professor writes about, he thoroughly dispenses with all the silliness about "organic" farming, and counters the hysteria about genetically modified foods. Moreover, he is an excellent writer and has the ability to make complex martial easy to understand, and he sprinkles a little wry humor throughout the text. This is truly a great book , but I guess the food zealots won't believe the real science. In his introduction he deals with the three types of people who have attended his lectures, and he places the zealots in his third category of 'don't bother me with the facts.' I highly recommend this book of real science.

The title could be improved but the contents are compelling to any one interested in the effect of food on one's health. The book is thoroughly based on current food science but some of the facts presented will be rejected by those who have already made up their minds, e.g. organic gardeners and those that believe organically grown food will make them live longer.

I'll never think of GMOs the same way after reading the chapter on them in this book.

A text I bought for my son who is taking a nutrition course in college. An up-to-date tome on the latest controversies surrounding what we eat and how it genuinely affects our health and well-being. A good read for anyone interested in their overall physical health.

I had to buy this book for a class and I'm upset that my money supported this author. This book has a mix of facts and falsehoods with a heavy dose of the author's bias. The list of references is quite short; when I wanted to check the source on some of the questionable claims, I had to do my own research. Let me provide an example: the author says that GM soy was "a huge success among US farmers." I don't know if it's quite that simple. I don't doubt there are farmers who saw a lot of benefit, but the farmers sued by companies like Monsanto over GM crops may not feel they were part of this "huge success." Similarly, the farmers who now must buy seed every year might feel that much of the "success" has been enjoyed by biotech corporations selling that seed, not farmers.While references were scarce, it was quite easy to find the author's personal opinions. For example, the author says the European Union Parliament is "misleading the consumer and doing so in the pursuit of their a priori anti-science view of the food chain." If this is in fact true, show me facts (with references) and let me, as an intelligent reader, come to this conclusion. Instead, the author frequently attacks people who oppose his views by saying they are "fundamentalist" or accusing them of promoting "myths" and "propaganda."*Amazon and the seller did a great job with my order. This one-star review has nothing to do with them.

A lot of other reviews complain that this book is suitable only for beginners - I loved it precisely BECAUSE it's suitable only for beginners.As far as I can tell, it contains all the info I need to start using Evernote properly, while hinting at many other interesting things I'll be able to do once I get a handle on it.It's a quick, easy read, which is perfect for a beginner because it's easy to be overwhelmed by new information. Add to that the fact that this book is a freebie and I'm a happy girl.

Very basic, quick read, if you know anything about Evernote. I downloaded the app a couple days ago and have been playing with it, and this book mostly confirmed what I'd already learned. I see people in 2 situations finding this book very useful:1. If you are tech-challenged and know nothing-to-very-littel about Evernote, or2. If you have trouble thinking outside of the box, this may help you consider the many possible uses of Evernote.If you don't mind playing around with software or you are looking for more in depth notes and hints, look elsewhere.

I recommend this book only to an absolute Evernote beginner - one that either hasn't used Evernote at all or tied to use it but didn't understand what to do. I had used Evernote already for basic note taking and found myself skimming quickly through the book without learning much. One thing I did learn was that you can achieve 2-factor authentication using Google Authenticator. That's something I will look into.

Having been an Evernote user for 5 years, I wanted to see if I am missing out some of the things Evernote is capable of. This book is a short introduction for using the Evernote and how its usage can simply your life. The book fully delivers on this promise. It has many ideas for using the Evernote in different ways that even after 5 years of using the Evenote, I found valuable. I would recommend this book for someone starting out with Evernote or to those experienced users who want to review their Evernote knowledge and pick a few interesting ideas.

This was a wonderful book. I've tried starting Evernote several times and pretty much have given up each time. Even without having Evernote in front of me, it sounds pretty clear. I'm excited to get started to be able to give it a try. If you've been confused before, start with this book and if needed, go on to other Evernote books! If you are new to Evernote and/or Genealogy this is probably more useful. I'm not new to either. I found it Okay -- but I noticed several typos and/or misused words that were missed when only doing a Spell-check versus having someone actually read it and edit or correct these errors. This was both annoying and gave me a lower opinion of the work as a whole, or lead me to seek out and read anything else by the author.

Jason Bracht, your average get-rich-quick vlogger who jumped on the Evernote bandwagon in 2014, writes an uninspired “tutorial” on the killer app, that just doesn’t do it justice. Unfortunately, all it contains is a list of the software’s features which can be found just as easily online. I’m disappointed.

its an excellent book pointing out some of the very good features of Evernote, well presented and easy to understand for us less informed about the latest aides we can find when learning to use our phones properly. I am one of the probably many Evernote Downloaders who left it at that and never knew how to use this great tool. Thank you for opening my eyes!

I can,t wait to see my four year old grandson this Thanksgiving and show him some of these tricks !

This book is great! You'll have a terrific time playing with all these cool tricks, stunts, and brainteasers. A wonderful collection of all the little gems that you love to perform for kids or really for anyone! So awesome to now have them all in one great book. Allan Zola Kronzek adds dozens of useful tips and solid presentational advice throughout the book. This is a real treasure and a great read. You'll love it!

I bought this book for a friend who has grandchildren and he loved it. He's just learning magic tricks to entertain them. I read some of the tricks before giving him the book and I was impressed. You don't need to buy anything special and it's a good way to quiet a kid down in a restaurant. I ordered another copy for myself!

I wish we had this book when the grandsons were younger (now they're in college). But our grand nephews and nieces will get a real kick out of these tricks once we hone our act together (No reason why grandmas and grand aunts can't join the fun along with grandpas and grand uncles). We love the great step-by, clear-cut explanatory graphics. Can't wait to see the kids' reactions!

Great book, easy to use. A note of caution- our 2 yr old grandson tried to shove a straw up his nose after seeing grandpa do that trick! We had to teach him the trick so he wouldn't try to copy what he THOUGHT grandpa was doing. Now they happily do the trick together. So use some wisdom, and you'll have a great time with this book.

I wanted to find an accessible translation by a woman to Lysistrata, since I started using Women on the Edge: Four Plays by Euripedes in my theatre history classes. That book is excellent and the women who did the translating did an impressive job of translating without adapting or making the language too contemporary. I was hoping I would find one of the 4 women who translated and edited that book to have published some Aristophanes' translations. In the search I landed on this book,and my students and I really enjoyed this read. The gloss that Sarah Ruden has added to the translated text is excellent, and she explains why she chose to translate a certain phrase in the way that she did. It really opened my students' eyes to the responsibility of a translator, and how a personal agenda cam creep into the translation. As with Women on The Edge, he most valuable aspect of this book in my mind is the excellent commentaries she added on Athenian Democracy, Ancient Greek Warfare, Athenian Women, and Greek Comedy. There is about 10 pages on each of these subjects and, wow, they are so beneficial. I will use this as a required text from now on because it is not expensive and the material included in the commentaries is an invaluable supplement to any theatre history text. Both this book and Women on the Edge provide solid historical context in a way that I have yet to find in larger anthologies or cheaper single play editions. I should add that my students, who are are reading the Greeks at the start of a more extensive theatre hist and lit class, gave both the translation and the commentaries thumbs up! However, one thing to be aware of is that this translation doesn't try to tone down the sexuality in the script. It is very direct ( and again Ruden explains her choices). If you are uncomfortable with the explicit language the Athenians used, or you are looking for an aggressive feminist theory approach to the theatrical text, maybe you won't like this. I want my students to understand the historical context, the laugh lines, and the theatricality of the text. It fits my goals very well. And check out the 4 plays and commentary in Women on the Edge, if you are a Euripides fan!

The story and the writing and the presence of phrases we use today (I really hope they are not an inclusion of the translator) can give a tricky sensation that the story has been written at most one hundred of years ago and not the two and half millennia that it has (!). The story is about a way that the heroine, Lysistrata, has devised to end the war that men have waged, the funny thing is that her reason to ideate her plan is the, mostly erotic, longing she feels for not being able to be with his man, and this is the reason the women of Greece accept to back her plan.It is not a war of sexes as the motivation is not to prove which side is the strongest; is rather a way to reunite women and men separated in love by the long war. Also I notice some observations about the government in times of Aristophanes.The translation is what almost gave me reason to give three stars to the book, this because as I am not native English speaker the Scottish accent given to the Spartans seems to me out of place and tiring to decode. Other point that makes me dubious of the work of the translator is if he decided to give a contemporary accent to Spartans thus what guaranty one could have that he has not introduced modern phrases to replace old ones... Finally I believe that with works so ancient is better to use a modern English than one that looks artificially old and disguises the natural poetry with anachronistic clothes. But then again this is a personal observation that could be no usual with the uses in English language.

Let me start by saying that I am not a classics scholar. I have no knowledge of Greek, and the last time I studied Latin was as a high school sophomore thirty five years ago. I am, however, a student of rabbinic literature, and anxious to understand the Greco-Roman milieu from which Rabbinic Judaism emerged. I also am anxious to know how these plays were performed orally, in front of a live audience. To that end, I have always preferred colloquial translations to more formal ones. And this translation certainly fits the bill, providing lots of "colorful" language. While I suspect that purists will find this approach off-putting, I personally find it exhilarating. Remember that we are talking about a comedy show, performed in front of a largely illiterate audience, and perhaps accompanied by imbibing copious amounts of wine. Bawdy? Yes. Off color in places? Yes. But a rollicking good time - yes! No wonder that in Providence, not far from my son's school (URI), they did a series of performances of Lysistrata - which audiences loved. I hope they used this text, or one which is very similar.

I don't think that this play has stood the test of time. I love the story idea of women withholding sex to stop war and I would love to see a modern day version of it but it was hard to follow sometimes and surprisingly graphic. I wonder how it was received in its time.

I had to buy this for a college literature class. It was called survey of literary humor- and let me assure you this book was not funny. If you want a comical book read “The Confederacy of Dunces”. It’s so ridiculous it’s funny. It’s the only book that has actually made me ever laugh out loud.

Good translation. Perhaps the best part of it, is it's historical appendices. Probably comes as close to capturing what we know of Athenian "humor" as any translation I've read. There are some allusions that are just lost to history, but still the story and the sharp dialogue is great.

After reading five other translations, I chose Ruden's translation to direct at our local community theatre. Yes, it was profane and bawdy but it was the most "performable" of all the translations I read. The footnotes and essays helped actors (and the director) to "get it" and the colloquial language made it accessible to contemporary audience members and those who are just reading the script. The actors and audience loved it! My favorite version...fun and scholarly!

About the Author

Dr Martin R. Edwards is reader in HRM and Organizational Psychology at King's Business School, King's College London. He has taught statistics to undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students for over 15 years and also teaches HR analytics to MSc students. As an HR consultant, he has delivered HR-analytic workshops to FTSE-100 companies.Kirsten Edwards is Head of Analytics at Empathix Ltd and has over 20 years' broad, international experience in analytics, HR and management consulting. She has close academic links with Kent Business School and King's Business School, where she is a visiting lecturer.
