This book is well deserving of more than five stars. If I could, I would. There has been a lot of focus in recent years on the Nazi members that escaped to South America, but rarely have I seen much focus on those who came to America. It was interesting to read about these individuals and what happened to them as a result of their actions. This author did not only compile a book of meticulous research and facts, but also was compassionate and yet neutral in his writing. You can tell when reading his words that he feels for those who were affected by the violence and unfairness of the Nazis. I appreciate feeling a connection with the author when reading historical accounts as it makes the reading less dry and impersonal.I also greatly appreciated that the recounting of events from the concentration camps was only briefly covered toward the beginning and thereafter only facts needed to support the book were used. It really does get tiring seeing so many books about this subject that simply spend page after page telling us what we already know.If you have an historical interest in this subject and would like to hear of events that you haven't heard before, this book is the way to go. I have the utmost respect for the writing ability of this author. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I just finished reading this most disturbing, and outstanding, book. As a boy hiding from the Nazis throughout World War II, I dreamed of a country where people were decent and free, and whose sons were fighting to defeat our oppressors. To me, the United States was “the shining city on the hill.” Of course, as an adult, I learned that my adopted country wasn’t perfect. I found out about its history of slavery and racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, imprisonment of Japanese-Americans. But I wasn’t ready for this bombshell: following World War II, the U.S. became a refuge for Nazi war criminals, some of whom were responsible (though perhaps indirectly) for the murders of twenty-five members of my family.I knew about a few high-level Nazis who came to America, such as Wernher von Braun, but I had been under the impression that their numbers were small, and that they were the “better” Nazis. After reading Eric Lichtblau’s excellent book, THE NAZIS NEXT DOOR: HOW AMERICA BECAME A SAFE HAVEN FOR HITLER’S MEN, I find that I was wrong. There were thousands of them–and they weren’t just the “better” ones. Many were murderers: high-level SS officers responsible for carrying out the Holocaust, concentration camp commanders and guards, rocket scientists who worked thousands of slave workers to death. How did this happen? As soon as the war ended, the US government wiped its collective memory clean of German atrocities and turned its attention to its new enemy–the Soviet Union. Almost overnight, anyone who was opposed to Communism was America’s friend. And no one was more anti-Communist than the Nazis. The CIA, the military, and the FBI employed Hitler’s murderers as spies. Other government agencies employed German scientists and engineers. Records of atrocities committed by these new American citizens were whitewashed, and they settled quietly into lives as good neighbors and ordinary folks throughout the country. The author exposes this ugly piece of history based on exhaustive research, examination of documents released only recently, and interviews with a small group of Nazi hunters in our Department of Justice, who worked tirelessly to bring the most notorious of the Nazis to justice and to strip them of their American citizenship. A disturbing–yet excellent–book written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer is a must read for everyone interested in contemporary American history: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Hoped to learn more about Operation Paperclip and the whole operation that took the most evil of men and repackaged them for use by the West -- and allowed them to escape justice for their crimes. Not impressed with this writer, though. Got some information on the subject, but the author seems more upset that the West used former Nazis against the Communists than that the West allowed mass-murderers to walk free and develop new lives in our own country.

The idea that some Nazis found a SAFE haven in the United States & later on collected pensions from Germany AND the USA is hard to stomach. In contrast, the widows of the 20th July resistance fighters did not receive any penny from the German government for a LONG time. The actions of the CIA, FBI & the Department of Justice are equally disturbing & murky. Bureaucracy at its worst & "white washing".But in the end the spirit of justice in several individuals prevailed. They unearthed painful facts. Eric Lichtblau is one of them. He is presenting the results to the general public in a fair & balanced way.

The story of Nazis being used after WWII for the Cold War has been told before. However, many still don't know about it, or haven't learned from its lessons. Lichtblau's book focuses mainly on those living among the population as if they had never been part of the Nazi Reich. Others have written on how Nazis used as spies didn't work all that well, Annie Jacobson's recent Operation Paperclip focuses on the rocket scientists (which Lichtblau touches on) and others like The Hitler Legacy show the negative repercussions to this day. It is not hindsight that the government could have done without the Nazis whom had caused a war that killed tens of millions, a war that tens of thousands died fighting. Not all the Germans who came here after the war were Nazis, but many slipped by and many were knowingly allowed to. A cautionary tale best listened to.
