This book is a total gem. If you're working on, or just interested in an old house in New England or elsewhere, you're going to love it. It is a totally practical, clear, easy to grasp compilation of the beautiful antique homes in the Green Mountain State. Wooden houses, stone houses, and brick houses, built from 1763 until 1850. (That's when the Victorian style took over, which Congdon hated. He intones that "as far as taste in architecture is concerned, "the sun has set." . But nobody is more excited about a Brick Federal House or a magnificent big Greek Revival farmhouse--the beautiful ones you see all along the byways of Vermont. The book is filled with scores of them from all areas of the state, all with photos and insightful descriptions...a page or two on each. Photos show exteriors, interior woodwork, windows, doors, mantels--everything that is original, unique or interesting about the particular house. Herbert Wheaton Congdon (1876-1965) was a well known architect (Two degrees in architecture from Columbia, member of the American Institute of Architecture.) who lived in Arlington, and was in love with Vermont. He was asked to be the expert chairman of the "Old Buildings Project" by the Univ. of VT in the 1930s, and this book is the result, orig. publ. in 1940, reprinted with some new material in 1973. He's a great storyteller, and has of course, an expert eye. Thsi book profiles all the houses, and also the people who built them, some very colorful, of course. My wife and I restored a 1790 Federal House in Jericho VT in the 1980s and of all the books we collected, this is the one I consulted over and over.
