I have read to date the entire North Oak series. This one touches on some strong issues of what many Teenage Girls deal with, without the help they need, because they are threatened or shamed into silence. Alex has been knocked down about as low as she can go and the author has done a fantastic job of describing her struggle and fight back. A battle that only the strong survive! It is well written and does a fantastic job of letting the reader realize some of the challenges a youth faces, dealing with bullies and so much more! I loved it
This North Oak I statement blows young Alex's heart side open, dealing with some heavy emotional issues. The author is gutsy to confront these issues but it almost seems like too much at once. While I recommend this series for youth I think I would reserve these later installments for 13+ year-olds.Great series and I look forward to more.
Great titleby seminole 53Could not put the book down until completed, great reading. This book takes on issues that today"s schools really need to put in the for front to stop bulling and abuse in the schools.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A literary classic in the making and must read book for any young adult! I found Dark Horse: North Oak #6 by Ann Hunter to be an independent gem of a book within the North Oak series. In my opinion, this book’s literary chops are along the lines of other literary series’ classics that I read as a young adult such as: Ann of Green Gables, Pollyanna, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. I would must definitely recommend this book for anyone young adult and above. The plot of North Oak #6: Dark Horse by Ann Hunter is a heart stopping and inspiring tale of how every underdog can make a difference. It follows one young women’s journey from victim to victor. This stand alone book is the sixth book in a young adult series that deals with the emotions engendered by various types of loss. It can be read alone or as part of the series. The story opens as Alex, an orphan, has to overcome a devastating act perpetrated against her by a fellow student at her school. This book shows Alex’s feelings of loss, low self esteem, and self doubt after the crime had been committed. The plot realistically shows how a crime victim can go through various stages, including but not limited to: feeling a loss of control, anger, and depression. By the end of the story, you see one young women’s heart rendering and inspirational journey from victim to victor.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book really illustrated the healing power of horses- and of course, supportive family and friends. Alex has been through so much and even though she feels weak, there is a definite strength to her.I really enjoy this series and have gotten very invested in the character changes, accomplishments and personal growth- and not just Alex's, some of her friends/family and horses. The accident she had on Promenade after his retirement was heart breaking and hopefully an important lesson she needed to learn about long term issues- she is learning that she can now think about her future at North Oak, as North does keep proving that he really supports her even when she isn't perfect. Her situation is no longer anything like her previous foster homes.*** Spoiler Alert***I absolutely think that Alex made the right choice to NOT ride Promenade in his last race. Even in hindsight there is no looking back to know that is she rode he could have/or would have won. Her first race on Morning Glory really illustrated how much experience she needs to get as a jockey and she has plenty of time to learn and become a good jockey. I think the blame of riding Promenade and losing that important race would have sent her into a spiral of depression and self doubt even worse than anything she was already experiencing.
I do not think any man can ever really know how devastating it is for.a woman to get raped. I am not going into that either, but in Dark Horse Alex, on the cusp of testing for her jockey license, got raped. This cast her into the depths of despair and despondency and just about three quarters of this book deals with her struggle to regain a zest for life again. Thank goodness for a sister like Laura, a friend like Carol and more support from family like Cade and North, even Dejado and Brooke.Being a dark horse, I.e. in racing terms the underdog, Alex sure came over as just that...the.outsider nobody really would give a chance to come back on top. Like Venus Nights, the flly with a doubtful breeding line.Yet, the thing is, dark horses often surprise.Ann Hunter tackled a sensitive issue.with great tact and ability to ensure a really good family drama against a racing back drop. I loved the story, even though I sometimes felt like throtling Alex myself a couple of times. Enjoy!
This is the sixth book in the series but the first I've read. Boy am I sorry I haven't been involved from the start! There is clearly a lot of background, much of which gets filled in at least enough to follow the story line, and such an amazing amount of . . . stuff . . . for Alex to carry along with her. She already has major issues with her self identity and then she is brutally raped by someone she trusted; all this before the book even starts. Sweet sixteen is a very rough age to begin with, hormones and all, and coping with PTSD and bad decisions--wow! So be prepared for a very intense read, a heroine you want to shake and yell at ("Don't go in the haunted house!") but for whom you can feel empathy and cheer on.
