This book remains the best, single-volume treatment of all aspects of the Royal Navy of this period and has become the standard reference work on the subject. The revised edition adds some dozens of new colour illustrations grouped on their own pages. The afterword states that "It has not proved practicable to amend the whole text or replace the black-and-white illustrations with colour ones." Some chapters have been rewritten. A page count of 350 may not seem huge but this is a large-format volume with a two-column layout containing closely-spaced text. It is copiously illustrated; indeed so much has been packed in that these are often reproduced much too small (and occasionally too faint as well) so that a magnifying glass is essential. Some of the old editing errors remain: the old abbreviation "&c" remains expanded to "& co" instead of "etc" in places.Overall I'm very happy with my purchase of this updated edition, having only previously seen a library copy of the original edition.
Much more of a key reference book. Small Print but well done and an essential part of a library for this period.
Very useful for research about the British navy during Nelson's time. I am not the most knowledgeable person on this subject, but I have found it helpful in expanding what I do know.
As you will infer from the other reviews, rating this book is a snap: it ain't got no five-star average for nothing! If you're interested in Nelson's Navy and this fascinating period of history, just order the book and get on with your life. Until it arrives, that is, and then you'll have to drop everything else and delight in its reading. Nothing less than the epitome of a well-written, illustrated history.
Excellent in every way - comprehensive, good value, interesting, useful, hard to fault. Covers the period of sailing ships at the peak of their development, with details of all sailing ship types, their design, building, fitting and guns. Discusses officers' and mens' recruitment, training, pay, uniforms, and the big gap between 'pressed men' and the most highly skilled and knowledgeable leading seamen and higher ranks. Often under very adverse weather and working conditions, low pay, danger in battles, long absences from home, poor food, and bad administration, 1815 had its 'glorious' actions, but also saw the beginning of the end of Nelson's Navy - the first cross-Channel steamship service began.
If you ever want to know ANYTHING about the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic era, this is THE book to buy. It's so full of information it's almost as heavy as an old oaken ship-of-the-line!
An exhaustive and fascinating account of Nelson's navy, including everything imaginable. If you are into the pudding, this is the book for you.
Being introduced to the period by Patrick O'brian's books, I have found that this volume is THE one to get about the British Navy during the Napoleonic wars. Full of scanned documents, diagrams, drawings/photos/art, a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge about everthing from how to provision a ship to how to sail it. Do not let this one sail away!
