The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America's National Parks, by Terry Tempest Williams

Review

“A collection of essays that’s a personal journey as much as a meditation on the purpose and relevance of national parks in the 21st century . . . Williams’s language has its own visceral beauty . . . The Hour of Land is one of the best nature books I’ve read in years, filled with seductive prose . . . It’s impossible to do Williams’s thought-provoking insights and evocative images justice in a short review. My only advice is to read the book. And then read it again, with pen in hand. And then visit a national park, because as Williams reminds us, they are ‘portals and thresholds of wonder,’ the ‘breathing spaces for a society that increasingly holds its breath.’” ―Andrea Wulf, The New York Times Book Review“The Hour of Land is about National Parks as battlegrounds. What it means to hold land in trust, who defines its best uses, the tangibility of park boundaries, and whether and how we will reconcile our history with our present and future, are all tested on these lands . . . It's a heady book. But it is an important one, too, because the chronically underfunded National Park Service―and more broadly, all our public lands―are confronting a staggering list of stressors right now . . . The Hour of Land is part of a conversation to kick off the next 100 years.” ―Outside Magazine“It would have been easy for Terry Tempest Williams to fall back on ‘the best idea we ever had’―an interpretation articulated by Wallace Stegner in 1983 and popularized by Ken Burns in 2009. Instead, Williams asks hard questions about the current relevance and original goodness of America’s parks. She offers a poetic revision to the Organic Act of 1916, which mandated the conservation of scenery and wildlife for the enjoyment of the public in such a manner as to leave them unimpaired. In her 400-page mission statement, Williams updates ‘enjoyment’ to spiritual renewal, specifies that ‘the public’ means more than white people, and insists that ‘unimpaired’ means what it says . . . a sincerely disobedient book.” ―Jared Farmer, Science“[A] necessary new book . . . Williams shows how national parks can be both symbols of and actual catalysts for the things that are best about America, offering a montage of grandeur that can not only make one tear up in gratitude and an embarrassing sort of patriotic pride but also demonstrate the real value of these ‘wholesome’ feelings to human emotional life, spurring one to engage differently with the world . . . Williams’ is only one voice in the polyphonic story of the American landscape. But it is an especially valuable one in addressing how land, even that which is nominally preserved in a state of Edenic purity, shifts with this country’s social history as much as it does through geology and time.” ― Jenny Hendrix, Slate“Whether contemplating the spiritual life she finds ‘inside the heart of the wild’ or marveling at the peaks and monuments that comprise ‘our best idea’ – the National Parks system – Williams movingly urges us to remember that ‘heaven is here.’” ―O Magazine“Readers who like their prose ardent and their politics leaning left will take particular pleasure in The Hour of Land . . . Williams is frequently a lyrical writer and an intrepid thinker . . . Reading her is better than buying a commemorative postage stamp ― she delivers us into a more thoughtful grove.” ―Karen R. Long, Newsday “A provocative, heartfelt collection of essays . . . As Tempest Williams turns her attention to 12 different parks, from Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska to Acadia National Park in Maine, she considers both the large-scale forces―economical, ecological, political―bearing upon these landscapes, and the smaller scope of her personal relationships with these individual parks . . . we are reminded that the parks are preserved only by the grace of people, and Tempest Williams insists, in the end, that ‘the history of our national parks and monuments is a history of subversion, shaped by individuals.’” ―Jeffrey Zuckerman, Pacific Standard Magazine“An impassioned call to preserve and protect our national park system, America’s network of natural splendor, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year . . . Repeatedly, [Williams] calls for us to listen to the land, to respect it, to behave more responsibly . . . [She] raises issues about movements to sell public lands, off-road vehicle damage and other ‘acts of greed,’ water use, toxic emissions from oil and gas development apparently causing increased infant mortality, and other problems. Williams awakens readers to present issues easily obscured by the National Park Service’s carefully cultivated, idyllic image . . . she hopes to shake us from our fondness for souvenir T-shirts.” ―Irene Wanner, The Seattle Times“Williams (When Women Were Birds, 2012), an ardent, often rhapsodic, always scrupulous witness to the living world and advocate for the protection of public lands, celebrates the centennial of the National Park Service in this enrapturing and encompassing chronicle of her deeply inquisitive, meditative, and dramatic sojourns in a dozen national parks. Guided by a finely calibrated moral compass and acute attunement to the spirit of the land . . . this is a uniquely evocative, illuminating, profound, poignant, beautiful, courageous, and clarion book about the true significance of our national parks.”―Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review)“Williams (When Women Were Birds), a longtime environmental activist, adds a meditative element to memoir as she shares her abiding love for America’s open spaces . . . In passionate and insightful prose, Williams celebrates the beauty of the American landscape while reinforcing the necessity of responsible stewardship." ―Publishers Weekly “[Williams’s] writing is poetic, passionate and unexpected . . . By turns sad, despairing, and hopeful, even thrilled in the presence of natural beauty, The Hour of Land is emotive, intelligent and well-traveled. It is only right that Williams should celebrate the Park Service's centennial with such a remarkable collection of wisdom and scintillating lines." ―Julia Jenkins, Shelf Awareness"A broadly ambitious and deeply impassioned collection of essays . . . There are few nonfiction writers who can capture the essence of the American wilderness landscape as eloquently as Williams . . . her distinctive prose style is capable of conveying a deep spiritual dimension within the physical setting . . . An important, well-informed, and moving read for anyone interested in learning more about America’s national parks." ―Kirkus Reviews"Taking us through American national parks and monuments, their history, their present reality, the rocks and birds and trees of them, traveling through place, the memory of place, its history, somehow, whether through the spectrum of poetry or personal story, natural history, history, or science, The Hour of Land reveals the very bones and sinew of our land. A redheaded woodpecker, Theodore Roosevelt’s grief, Terry Tempest Williams’s straight-backed father, a horseback ride with her husband through the terrain of the Civil War--slowly, place by place, our country begins to emerge. The South’s Civil War outlook is linked to that of today’s Sagebrush Rebellion here in the West; a planned wall in Big Bend to the inevitable desecration of nature; fratricidal rage to the glorious indifference of the Arctic, righteous rage to the devastation of oil spills, of the earth; Alcatraz to injustice everywhere. The conflagration of Glacier National Park sets the pages on fire, and yet the monument to Cesar Chavez offers the possibility of change: the Hour of Land is at hand. Terry Tempest Williams has literally shown us our country, its physical body, the bones of its history, the urgent reality of our roles in its future. A manifesto that everyone must read and then act upon." --Betsy Burton, The King’s English Bookshop, Salt Lake City, Utah

If you are interested in the fragility of our National Parks system this book is a must read. I've since read quite a few books by authors I respect regarding their opinions about the scarcity of protected land and Terry Tempest Williams is as sentimental and well researched as they come. I love her sentimentality and her, sometimes, mushy language. The establishment of these places were created for a reason and are most in danger due to the current administration. Williams takes on all politics across the divide and no one comes away smelling of roses. Williams is completely bias-she is always on the side of land and the life/lives the land supports- I love that about her. I have always thought the strength of our species is the capacity to love what cannot love us back. Williams understands this about humans- here is one of her many brilliant musings: "The legacy of the Wilderness Act is a legacy of care. It is an ac of loving beyond ourselves, beyond our species, beyond our own time. To honor wildlands and wild lives that we may never see, much less understand, is to acknowledge the world does not revolve around us. The Wilderness Act is an act of respect that protects the land and ourselves from our own annihilation." The passage sums the book up perfectly and is the soul of each and every essay. A wide range of topics are discussed in each essay from the BP oil spill and the people along the Bayou whom's stories we never heard, to certain fish, bird and mammal populations which are gravely in danger. Williams also spills some memoir in here as well which is welcome to truly understanding the compassion behind her observations. "The Hour of Land" should be required school reading.

What begins as a personal memoir of love, land and family gradually transforms into a call to arms in the battle against climate change and the status quo responsible for it. This is a masterful work that will touch you deeply and perhaps even inspire you to take action. TTW has never written better than she does in this work, she has never been more open and passionate. I really can't describe how profoundly I have been moved by this book.

Terry Tempest Williams is an environmentalist, author, and poet who tours a number of National Parks and shares her deep spiritual experiences there, her love of nature, her outrage at the destruction of our treasures, and even the history we need to understand. Her writing often is poetic and stirring. Occasionally this format loses the reader, but is never dull. One comes away with a deeper appreciation of these American treasures.

A worthy subject taken on by a sincere environmentalist, but spoiled by self indulgence. Williams has quite a following, and it is clear she has a talent for engaging the eye in Nature. For example, I loved her walk into a canyon in Big Bend when her husband walked naked and she reported on insects. I also liked her report on the monument of presidents in South Dakota, seeing it through her disillusioned father’s eyes. But in whole, the mixture of family relationships and environmentalism was too mysterious and fragmentary to be satisfying.

More of a memoir than a travel guide, The Hour of Land, I’m willing to bet, is unlike any of the many books that are currently being published to coincide with National Parks Centennial. Terry Tempest Williams has written about 12 National Parks and Monuments in layers: surface descriptions through the eyes of someone who has spent much of her life watching, wandering, and wondering; and then all that is beneath the surface including the political maneuvering and legislation that created them; the dark energy that threatens them. But also their magic and mystery and their role as a source of imagination and possibility. We realize that the deeper we look into these places—which may be as close as what we, in America, have to call “Sacred Lands—the better we know ourselves. The post-modern black and white photos (Sebastio Salgado, Sally Mann, Robert Adams, Emmet Gowin among them) tell their own story and their selection and positioning within the book become clues to a magic riddle for which each reader is sure to find his or her own unique solution. This thrilling book, may be her best yet.

B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you spend your time prancing barefoot through daisy fields with flowers in your hair and space between your ears, save your money! Awful!! I did recycle my copy though.

William's reminisces of her adventures in a number of parks/monuments as well as her own and other's poetic descriptions and expressions of awe make for pleasurable reading. These musings are accompanied with the history of parks, especially the controversies surrounding their establishment. Her advocacy for the preservation of wild and historic places is evident and includes the current day controversy surrounding, for example, Bears Ears.

She writes like a poet - thoroughly enjoying her writing and insights on the land, family & history. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in touring the nation's parks, and a wonderfully well-written book for anyone appreciative of prose and insightful musings.

I purchased the castle and the construction site book for my 5 yo for Christmas, and they are some of his favorite books. He and I both love that he can look through the book and search for things on his own. I like that we can look together for fun scenes. I also really appreciate that the books are not hardcover. They will be great for a plane ride. In fact, I'm planning on purchasing several more for an international trip that we are taking.

As a classical educator, I tend to keep towards the best samples of writing and art I can find, but sometimes there are other books that have their place."A Year in a Castle" skips through the year (meaning it doesn't cover every month) telling a brief story -- moving in, wedding, Christmas, siege, etc -- and asking if your child can find this and that, but also suggesting your child keep his eyes out for the thief, check on what the prisoner is up to, and think about how each of these characters might tell their story of their life in the castle. With the break away sections to peek-a-boo at all aspects of life, it makes it easy to ask your child to tell you stories about the different people, to engage the imagination while introducing basic castle words (such as "bailey") and basic castle life. We had a lot of fun with this one

I ordered this book for my two youngest grandsons, but once I had it in my hands I was so amazed and fascinated that I'm having a hard time passing it on. This is easily the most creative, detailed and totally involving book I have ever seen. The concept of depicting the same view of the castle through successive seasons and events, and following the activities of the people inside and outside the castle, is brilliant! It's such fun to look for specific characters, or to peek into the interior and see how the servants, knights, cookstaff -- even the clever prisoner -- are behaving. There is no award high enough for this level of imagination and production. I am so excited to order other books in this series, but I expect they will be as difficult to give up when they arrive!

My son and I love reading this. The pictures and detail are super entertaining.

Great book, lots of fun to read to both of my kids (3 and 5) at night, each page asks you to try and find all of the characters and objects on the page, and each page is a different month of the year showing you how life at the castle changes over time. Pictures are crammed full of lots of tiny details that the kids love.

Lots of detailed pictures and interesting information. Fun to look for the things the text mentions. My 9-year old loves it.

This book had been a favorite with my kids (ages7,5,3) Even the 3 year old loves to look for things on each page.

I am the grandma and I bought one of these for my granddaughter and one for myself! This is an awesome book that show the history of long ago in a fun way!

This book remains the best, single-volume treatment of all aspects of the Royal Navy of this period and has become the standard reference work on the subject. The revised edition adds some dozens of new colour illustrations grouped on their own pages. The afterword states that "It has not proved practicable to amend the whole text or replace the black-and-white illustrations with colour ones." Some chapters have been rewritten. A page count of 350 may not seem huge but this is a large-format volume with a two-column layout containing closely-spaced text. It is copiously illustrated; indeed so much has been packed in that these are often reproduced much too small (and occasionally too faint as well) so that a magnifying glass is essential. Some of the old editing errors remain: the old abbreviation "&c" remains expanded to "& co" instead of "etc" in places.Overall I'm very happy with my purchase of this updated edition, having only previously seen a library copy of the original edition.

Much more of a key reference book. Small Print but well done and an essential part of a library for this period.

Very useful for research about the British navy during Nelson's time. I am not the most knowledgeable person on this subject, but I have found it helpful in expanding what I do know.

As you will infer from the other reviews, rating this book is a snap: it ain't got no five-star average for nothing! If you're interested in Nelson's Navy and this fascinating period of history, just order the book and get on with your life. Until it arrives, that is, and then you'll have to drop everything else and delight in its reading. Nothing less than the epitome of a well-written, illustrated history.

Excellent in every way - comprehensive, good value, interesting, useful, hard to fault. Covers the period of sailing ships at the peak of their development, with details of all sailing ship types, their design, building, fitting and guns. Discusses officers' and mens' recruitment, training, pay, uniforms, and the big gap between 'pressed men' and the most highly skilled and knowledgeable leading seamen and higher ranks. Often under very adverse weather and working conditions, low pay, danger in battles, long absences from home, poor food, and bad administration, 1815 had its 'glorious' actions, but also saw the beginning of the end of Nelson's Navy - the first cross-Channel steamship service began.

If you ever want to know ANYTHING about the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic era, this is THE book to buy. It's so full of information it's almost as heavy as an old oaken ship-of-the-line!

An exhaustive and fascinating account of Nelson's navy, including everything imaginable. If you are into the pudding, this is the book for you.

Being introduced to the period by Patrick O'brian's books, I have found that this volume is THE one to get about the British Navy during the Napoleonic wars. Full of scanned documents, diagrams, drawings/photos/art, a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge about everthing from how to provision a ship to how to sail it. Do not let this one sail away!

Bowling seems like such a simple game. Just chuck the ball down the lane and whack the pins.Crash!! What a beautiful sound. The only problem is most of your success is a little skill but mostly dumb luck. However, you may notice a lack of consistency and realize you don't know how to get to the next step. If you get serious and want to steadily improve this book is for you. There is so much solid information for the modern bowler that for me it has become a reference book. This is where you can start and likely finish your bowling technique library.

I have learned a ton by reading this book. The folks at the bowling alley laugh because of all the yellow highlights I have in it. My game has improved and I cant believe how much I was doing wrong. The book is easy to understand and well written. Its a perfect book for anyone wanting to improve their game or just learn more about the different aspects of bowling.

Early timing and Late timing are explained and depicted on p.35 and p.36. Other books talk about it as your supposed to know what early and late timing is! Also finish should be at 1:00 o'clock (right-handed) or 11:00 o'clock (left-handed). Also a good tip, your weight should be centered over you base, with your weight slightly on your on your non starting foot. This book is well written and covers all the basics of bowling. A very good reference, I highly recommend it.

This is a useful text. Of course, the writer has to cover all types of bowlers and all knowledge levels and all parts of bowling. This leaves it a bit repetitive, simplistic and general. But I don't see how to get around that. In the end, it is a useful guide in its own right, and a useful adjunct to one-on-one lessons. Thus, well worth the buying!

I had to get the 2nd edition to get updated on reactive and newer balls and techniques as I was getting back into bowling after many years of not participating. I've had the 1st edition which is very informative and well organized, for many years. So I knew the 2nd edition would be as well written and informative as the 1st edition and bring me up to date on the newer balls and equipment. A must own for any bowler wanting to improve their game as just one bit of information can transform your game.

Pictures, diagrams, into for right and left handed bowlers... this book is an absolute must for anyone wanting to improve their bowling.

Great book on bowling! Covers everything a new bowler needs and more. One of the best for conveying knowledge and coverage of multiple topics I've read. Many well taken pictures for both right and left handed players so a plus for any lefties out there. I would consider this book a must for any bowling library.

very good book and covers things that most dont with easy to follow instructions

Bruce writes from his heart as he shares experiences from the perspective of law enforcement. I was left with an appreciation of law enforcement that cannot be gained from watching prime time television. But, this is more than a sharing of events. It is the story of a man humbled by God's grace and the forgiveness of a Godly wife. It is a story of a man who recognizes that God is ready to give us help in our everyday lives.

It's September 1943, three years since German forces seized control of Denmark. Nazi soldiers patrol the streets and control the government, hospitals, schools, newspapers, and rail system; possessing an illegal newspaper like THE FREE DANES might very well get you killed. Copenhagen is under an 8PM curfew, and supplies are strictly rationed. And now, three years later, the Nazis are just beginning to "relocate" Jewish citizens, the way they have in so many other occupied territories. But the Danish government received warning, which it passed on to Jewish religious leaders. Thanks to one German high official - not to mention countless courageous Danes - most of Denmark's 7,000 Jewish citizens were smuggled to safety in Sweden. In just a matter of weeks. Right under the occupiers' noses.Against this backdrop, Lois Lowry weaves a story of courage and compassion that's only partially a work of fiction. When word comes that they're in danger, the Rosen family sends their only daughter, ten-year-old Ellen, to stay with family friends the Johansens: Ellen's best friend Annemarie, her little sister Kirsti, and their parents. When Nazi soldiers come knocking, Ellen poses as the Johansens' dead daughter Lise. Afraid of arousing the soldiers' suspicions, the women travel to stay with Inge's brother, Henrik, who lives by the sea. Before the war is over, young Annemarie will find her resolve tested. Will she undertake a dangerous mission in order to save her friend Ellen - or will she succumb to her fear of the soldiers?Suitable for children, but also rich with adult meaning, NUMBER THE STARS is a beautiful and moving story about courage in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Lowry peppers her story with fairy tale elements - particularly during Annemarie's mission - making a potentially upsetting book that much more palatable to younger and more sensitive readers. And by viewing wartime occupation through the eyes of a child, we gain insight into how those of different ages processed and coped with the traumatic events unfolding around them.(It kind of breaks your heart when Annemarie observes that the soldiers mostly escape five-year-old Kirsti's notice: "For Kirsti, the soldiers were simply part of the landscape, something that had always been there, on every corner, as unimportant as lampposts, throughout her remembered life.")Bravery isn't the absence of fear, as Annemarie learns, but the will to overcome it, no matter the cost. Through their Resistance, the Danish people did indeed give "the gift of a world of human decency."

Easy read - written for youth but I read this in a College Course for Multiculturism and Child Lit. Great story, easy to follow the story lines and characters and definitely written at an age appropriate level for middle school age or possibly a bit younger depending on maturity and interest. As an adult, I enjoyed the view of Annemarie and the innocence as we see things from her perspective, that of a young girl during WWII.If you've read the Diary of Anne Frank, this is very different. There are some parts that may seem a little scary for younger children but by far, this is the best I've read for young ones. There are no graphic details of the trauma and abuse. While some things are mentioned in a way you get the idea that something bad has happened, its done in a way that is gentle for readers.

Number the stars is a wonderful story about bravery and friendship. It is set in occupied Denmark during WWII and tells the story of two families, the Johansen’s and the Rosen’s. The Johansen’s are Danish and Christian and the Rosen’s are Danish and Jewish. The families live in the same apartment block in Coppenhagen and are very good friends. The book discloses a lot of interesting facts about life in Coppenhagen during WWII including the food and other shortages. I learned an awful lot about the war in this small European country through reading this book such as:In 1943, the Danish resistance movement rescued all but 500 of its Jewish population of 7 000 to 8 000 from being sent to Nazi concentration camps by transporting them to neutral Sweden where they were offered asylum.Denmark surrendered to the German invaders in 1940 as the King, Christian X, did not want to subject his people to a slaughter. He knew his army was no match for the Germans. In August 1943, the Danes sank their entire navy in Copenhagen harbour as the German’s approached to take the ships over for their own use. There are some other fascinating historical facts included in this book that I won’t reveal as they would be spoilers. When the Jews are warned by their Rabbi at the Jewish New Year Celebration that the Nazi’s were going to start rounding them up for deportation that night, Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen are thrown into turmoil as both families act together to save the Rosen’s from deportation and smuggle them to Sweden. This book is for children aged 8 to 12 years old and is a wonderful way to introduce this age group to the horrors of war in an appropriate way. The book is not at all graphic but it does convey the fear and tragedy that is war. This book won the Newbery Award.

A fan of Lois Lowry, I was excited to read this with my child when she was assigned to choose a historical fiction book for an assignment. This was an awesome and educational choice. Out of 4 book report assignments, this one was her favorite read, mine too. It was especially interesting reading the Afterward, learning how fact and fiction merged into this beautiful tale of courage.

I loved this little book. Being of Danish extraction (and my husband Swedish) made it most interesting to me! I knew very little about how the Danes and Swedes helped the Jewish people during WWII, and this book made me very proud to be Scandinavian. The Danes rescued about 7000 Jews out of their country and into neutral Sweden in false bottom fishing boats. They used handkerchiefs stained with rabbit blood and cocaine to fool the noses of the German dogs who searched their boats.I loved the fact that the Danes loved their KIng Christian X so much. When asked how he could feel safe going out and riding his horse among them everyday, the answer was that all of Denmark was his bodyguard. My Grandmother's name was Ingeborg, too, as was the mother's in this story! It may be a children's book, but it is just as good for adults.

It's probably not the fault of the book, though, that I didn't use it. I thought there would be more cycling information in there than there was, though it doesn't really claim to have much cycling info, and I thought I would do more hiking than I did. So I guess the bottom line that I would stress to travelers is that unless you're explicitly planning to go to the big island to do a lot of hiking, you may want to consider that the real allure of Hawaii is the water and that you'll be drawn back to it over, and over, and over.

Some interesting places to visit plainly described in this really cool book. Even as a resident - I have found it very informative and it's a lot of fun to find some of these little known hidden gems here in Hawaii!

Used this book on our trip the Big Island and It proved to be very helpful. Yes, we did find a couple errors but keep in mind places go out of business and places change with time. There is also the fact that some roads in Hawaii do not have street names posted, in general the infrastructure there is not as good as in the continental US. That said, this book was the best of the three we used in terms of accuracy both in directions and describing attractions. I recommend it.

Amazing book that allowed us to really see the best trails and views of the island. The section on lava is a bit light, but I recommend Kalapana Cultural Tours where great local guides took us to the most amazing hike of my life. Also, know that if you opt for a "poke the lava tour," you are partaking in a culturally forbidden activity for the native Hawaiians.

Consistently had the scoop on great out of the way places to swim/snorkle. Great directions to some hard to finds stuff. We tried some of the hikes too. If you like fancy hotels and sitting by the pool and shopping this is not for you. If your idea of vacation is doing stuff outside its just great.

I find the organization of the book difficult for electronic navigation. Also felt like old book and information with a new cover. Ended up not being used on our trip.

Brief, easy to read. Perhas not as comprehensive as some guidebooks. Very personal writing and opinionsand opinions

The book as all the information but for a traveling guide it needs to have more color photos to appreciate the places.

#8,990 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

To be honest I didn't like this book, but I give it three stars for being extremely well written. I simply didn't like its characters; didn't care for their mental issues, and that is what to me the book is about, a bunch of mentally ill people. Was it because her dad took dirty pictures of her? Was it the war? Was it a number of things that made this woman resort to angry mindless sex with dirty soldiers? To drunken cooking later in life? To just nastiness? I feel like her anger issues and her romance with Man smothers anything artistic about her. Yes, the details about making photos back in the 30s is fascinating, but from then on, it's downhill. Regardless it's not a "woman beats all odds and comes out the better for it" tale. And there's not a lot inspiring about her. She took some war photos and was scarred by it but doesn't seem to be a woman to admire or aspire to.

This is an okay novel. Since it's written in the present tense and third-person it reads like an extended set of stage directions, which made me feel I couldn't truly get to know the characters. Lee felt very distant and inscrutable, and Man Ray character felt flat as well. On the whole it feels like a missed opportunity to explore the lives of some genuinely intriguing people. One other thing: as I've been working out my thoughts about this book I've been reading the customer reviews. Every one-star review has vanished--and there have been several, most of them pointing out the unlikeability of the characters and a few expressing dismay at the "racy" content. There are rules, I imagine, for what you can post, but I wonder if the publisher or Amazon is removing these lower ratings to keep up the sales. (I wonder if this review will be made to disappear as well?)

I seriously cannot say enough great things about this book. With 2 young kids, reading fell to the back burner for more than 5 years. Then I read an early manuscript of this and could not put it down. I fell back in love with reading and now just want to find other equally gorgeous books to soak up. I'm now re-reading it -- in its published version -- and every single page brings new joy to me. The story, the writing, the dialogue, the imagery.....this novel in nothing short of incredible. Now, back to finishing The Age of Light!

Sometimes a novel comes along that you become so enthralled with that you do not want to put it down and almost feel sorrow at reaching the final pages. The Age of Light is that kind of novel. It offers a sexy, intimate look at the life of photographer Lee Miller. Lee has worked as a model in New York but wants to get behind the camera and be in charge, so she finds a way to become Man Ray’s assistant after meeting him in Paris in 1929. Their love affair is totally believable, as is her inability to find satisfaction with one man, even an artistic genius like Man Ray. Brief chapters about her war photography interrupt the narrative but they are not at all jarring. Instead they provide a deeper understanding of all that she aspired to while with Man Ray. What I found particularly fascinating was the characterization. Whitney Sharer captures Lee’s imperfections so well. We share her bad moods. We struggle with her choices. We try to make sense of her inconsistencies. I have met women like Lee Miller in my life and did not especially like them. After reading this book, I felt as if an examination of their childhood years might have helped in understanding their behavior. Run, don’t walk, to your closest independent bookstore to get a copy of this novel. You will not be disappointed.

Not sure why all the hype...this book is so tragic and so depressing. It feels like 50 shades...too much sex and S&M for my taste.

I loved this book and, as others have commented, it is beautifully written. I'll certainly buy Ms. Scharer's next book.I've read biography's of Lee Miller and seen scores of Man Ray's photos, many of which sprung into my mind as they were described in the book. I wonder if this familiarity with their work improved, or distracted from my experience in reading this book. The Wall Street Journal review that led me to this book featured the iconic photo of Lee in Hitler's bathtub, a startling visual on many levels. But, is a written description of that work, or Man Ray's experimental work adequate to describe their places in the history of photographic art?In sum, it probably doesn't matter. This is a story about how each of these fascinating artists felt ABOUT their work, each other and their times along with their mutual misappropriation of their talents. It matters less knowing exactly why they were more than just another studio photographer and fashion model. This is a fine book....amazing that it is a first novel. Read it. But, if you're not familiar with them, it won't be a spoiler to read the Wikipedia entries of them both before starting The Age of Light.

I have read previous books that have included glimpses into Lee Miller’s life in Paris in the 1930’s and I have read factual accounts about her life as a Vogue model, life with Man Ray, as a war correspondent. This book, while fiction, brought what I have read previously into one powerful story giving insight into this complex, talented and troubled woman. How much is fiction and how much is fact is unknown but the book is absorbing and a great read! I look forward to seeing what or who will be next from this author.

It was difficult to have any sympathy for Lee Miller, the way she was written in this book and after reading other pieces, I had developed admiration for her -- I'm glad this wasn't my first encounter with her life. Her obvious passion for and ability to create wasn't fully explored. I found my self wishing for more time spent on her life away from Man Ray. How did she make a life as an independent woman? What was it like to be one of the few female war photographers? What did she think about how her work was received? The book should have cut out many of the breathless and endless descriptions of wild parties and sexual encounters and spent more time on Lee Miller's life.
