I had to read this book for a history class, and to put it nicely, I don't tend to enjoy learning about history, partially because it's either distorted to seem pretty or presented with facts and therefore absolutely depressing. I approached this book the same way I do any other history book: with the assumption that I would skim through it.Boy, was I wrong.Less than one chapter in, I accepted the fact that I would be enjoying this book thoroughly and spending time giving thought to its words. This book gives facts and facts that would normally be depressing, were it not for Zinn's reminder of the people who individually made a difference. He presents story after story that will empower any individual, and make anyone appreciate the many individuals who took a stand and made sacrifices for where we are today. It is not sugarcoated and it is not overly idealistic, but it is a story of how passion, over the years, made a tremendous impact on history.Strongly recommend for anyone who feels like giving up on society or humanity, or anyone who needs a push to do what they know is right.

I have read all of Howard Zinn 's books and have learned an awful lot about this country. Most of it I had suspected but after reading his work, I know it was true. This is something that everyone should read then reread it again to keep it in your mind. It's hard to believe that so many people can be fooled in the way that is happening today.

Zinn truly did have a front row seat to history that he embraced. Zinn continues to focus on the individual and small acts that build to a crescendo of action. His involvement in civil rights and the anti war movement was eye opening. I had heard of the use of napalm on Royan but never knew Zinn was one of the American's that dropped the ordinance. That truly had a profound impact on Zinn. This was a great book and cab truly broaden ones perspective on the events that made us what we are today and a true cautionary tail of what can happen if we don't take action.

Howard Zinn lived his life in much same way he wrote history: passionately dedicated to what he believed was right, and invariably on the side of those who were on the short end of history. His memoir/autobiography details his working class roots, WWII service as a bombadier, and teaching career at Spelman College and Boston University. Zinn had personal roles in the civil rights campaigns of the 1950s and 1960s. It should come as no surprise that he was also in the forefront of the anti-war movement. Less well known episodes concern his...tensions would be the charitable description with the administration at Boston University. The prose is lively and direct. It is a more accessible road to his views and interpretations than his People's History of the United States.

We need more like Howard Zinn. He told the truth about history and today he is needed more than ever. I read this autobiography in one sitting. His work in civil rights is a lesson for all of us, if only we would listen.

Excellent book depicting an interesting behind the scenes story about the truth and the ordinary men and women whom you do not see nor read about or are mentioned in history books or given credit to by the known hero's of the civil rights movement. The real power behind the movement were ordinary people with real courage and willingness to stand up for their rights as American citizens, and for that matter, as ordinary human beings. Enough was enough! The power of the individual's Zinn had written about, their human will was amazing as well as inspiring!

Howard Zinn, who died just recently at the age of 87, lived to see his amazing A People's History of the United States, with 2 million copies sold, made into the TV production, The People Speak. This is not a formal autobiography but a series of essays about his life that, like the life itself, are funny, profoundly serious, and enjoyable to read. Howard and I wrote a column for the Boston Globe, "Left Field Stands" in which we alternated every Friday writing columns, in 1972-1974. The Globe took a risk having its first true Left columnists and the column was so successful that after 2 years, Howard and I were fired. He mentions this in the book. For the 2 million who have read A People's History this is an entertaining and moving picture of an exceptional life of commitment.Eric Mann

A good book according to my 17 year old son. He read it for a report in school. My son liked it enough, I bought another book by the author for leisure reading for him.

If you are looking for a practical, no nonsense guide to raising a pack of canines to pull something heavy for you- this is it. An easy read with informative content, that does not go into exhaustive detail but gives you the tools and/or knowledge it takes to run a kennel of athletes. If you are a 'behind-the-scenes-phile' like me, with a love of the outdoors and a fondness for life in extreme climates, curl up with this easy to read mini-manual of sled dog life in the Great White North straight from one of the greats.

My first read on Sled dogs. Seavey is up front and not very PC. Just what I like. I am someone who has trained many retrievers for competition and do not think this book will help me on that, but I wasn't looking for help with that portion of my life. My background does give me the impression that author understands dogs quite well and is good at what he writes about. Do not expect a instruction manual on how to dabble in sled dogs. He seems to have only one goal, and that is to win, or at least be competitive, in the 1,000 mile Iditarod Dog Race. There are no half ways with a mission like that. If that is your aim, this a absolute must read. If not, still a fun read and you will know more about this unique and interesting obsession. Book lists authors accomplishments, but since published one of his sons (Dallas Seavey) won the 2012 race and became the youngest winner ever. It sure seems he is staying current with the evolution of this sport.

Mitch Seavey knows how to train dogs, and even though this book is a 'good read' for any mushing fan, he goes 'all out' in sharing his ideas of what works and what doesn't in training sled dogs for distance racing, particularly the Iditarod. Reading it is like sitting in a room in Alaska chatting with Mitch. If you like to 'talk dogs', you'll love this book.

I thought it was very good. He is very honest and like another reviewer said not cotten-padded or wool-wrapped! I got a lot out of what he has said about training methods and his training tecniques have greatly improved my team. The book was soooo funny! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their team.

An excellent book from a dog driver that has forgotten more than most people will ever know. Its an honest account of one mans training techniques and his views on the training techniques used by others.Reading it is like hearing him speak it, its not a fluffy, cotton wool wrapped sanitised account, its a down to earth, this is how it is type of read, and all the better for it I say. Written with a sense of humour that can be fully appreciated by anyone that has ever been behind a dog team.A brilliant book that made me laugh out loud (especially the chapter on Velcro). Worth every penny and even better the second time you read it, which you will.. I can almost guarantee it.

great book

One Of the very best dog books I 've ever read.I recommend it to all dog owners.

There are sadistic elements in the book. As another reviewer mentioned, Mitch Seavey tells people to beat dogs who misbehave. He also advocates that people perform an act that could easily result in a dog's paw getting burned. Seavey says to trim the hair on the bottom of the dogs' feet even with their pads to prevent ice balls from forming. He says that after you've trimmed the hair you need to 'candle' their feet, or singe the ends of the hair that you trimmed. Seavey wrote: "My boys are always looking for faster ways to do their chores. I suppose that is why they started using a propane torch to 'candle' dogs' feet. That in turn explains why, upon entering the shop one winter's day, I observed the back half of my best leader apparently going up in flames. This gives a whole new meaning to the term, 'Put the dog out, son!" Singing the hair is totally unnecessary and puts the dog at grave risk for having his paws burned.Mitch Seavey tells people to punish their dogs for not eating everything in about 30 seconds. He wrote: "If the dog doesn't eat everything in about 30 seconds, do not just leave food laying around thinking he may eat more at a later time. Take the food away. Give the dog only clear water the next day and half rations the following day. Resume regular feeding the fourth day." This is harsh punishment. On page vi, there's a photo of dogs going up a hill that has a 45 degree incline. The caption says, "Fourteen dogs pull the four-wheeler up a hill in first gear with the motor off." On page 81, you'll read these words from Mitch Seavey: "If you drive your truck up the hill in four-wheel-drive, then the 16-dog team should be able to pull a 300cc four-wheeler up it. Make them pull it up there, step by step, creeping up hill until you level out and speed up." He goes on to say that by forcing dogs to pull a 300cc four-wheeler up to the top, "you are teaching the dogs that there is no obstacle or situation that arises, no circumstance under which they are allowed to stop pulling forward."Seavey calls the dogs "running, pulling, machines," "knuckleheads," "bums," "lunk-heads," etc. He has no empathy for the dogs he punishes so harshly.

Review

“An audacious idea that might jump-start a lagging conversation about a burning issue…[I]f Half-Earth takes us any closer to sparking greater effort, it will cement Wilson’s already remarkable legacy.” - Mike Weilbacher, Philadelphia Inquirer“Wilson’s passion for the planet shines through on these pages. He looks at life in its broadest, grandest sweep…Wilson is a thinker in the tradition of Alexander von Humboldt.” - Matthew Price, The National“Few experts have offered such an exuberant and optimistic plan for dealing with [climate change] as biologist Edward O. Wilson…The strength of his argument lies in his ability to elegantly unveil the bigger picture, and to define and examine what in our essential human nature has led us to this point…[W]e need Wilson’s reminder that we are not demigods, but are instead, as he puts it, ‘a biological species tied to this particular biological world.’” - Jessi Phillips, Sierra“As an outline of our terrible ecological plight, it does a first-class job.” - Robin McKie, Guardian

Edward O. Wilson is angry, and so is his book. No one is listening and things have gotten unbelievably worse. There’s no evidence to provide any real hope. He describes future paleontologists easily identifying the sedimentary layers of our era by the amount of chemicals and plastics in the soil strata, by the fragments of machines and weapons everywhere, and the lack of varied species identified. This is our legacy. As I have written elsewhere, it took the Earth four billion years to reach the Holocene, an era where climate, ice, water and life achieved a state of pleasant equilibrium, with jet streams and ocean currents arranged in a virtuous circle. In just the last 150 years, Homo sapiens has upset the entire system, killing off the Holocene in favor of the Anthropocene, in which one invasive species rules, and any other species that does not add to its immediate benefit can be eliminated. And if even if it does add to its benefit, if it hasn’t been domesticated, it can still face extinction. We are clear-cutting the biosphere. The book is a relentless, hardhitting – make that pounding – indictment of our custodianship. We are far worse than negligent; we are malevolent. We think it does no harm to remove a species from its environs – and its role. The way it really works, Wilson says, is there are no species living on the periphery; every species depends on other species or is critical to their survival. Our total disregard of this simple rule causes unpredictable disaster.Wilson has been a naturalist all his long life, and it pains him to find things in this state. His childlike appreciation comes through, often overtaking his anger with the wonder of various species and how they live and contribute so differently. That we lose them daily before we even know how they fit in is criminal to him.Wilson has introduced me to an ugly new subspecies. I will call it the Anthropocene Apologist. AA appears to be a subset of scientists and ignorant people whose attitude is yes, we’ve already wrecked this planet, so let’s just take what we want now and not worry about it. AAs say we should welcome all the invasive species because they fill gaps left by species we made extinct. That they will figure out what to do about the mess when the time comes. It infuriates Wilson. He keeps bringing it up in different contexts, probably because after a lifetime of watching the degradation, he can’t believe there are actual AA scientists promoting it.His solution is to set aside far more than the 15% now dedicated to wilderness areas and parks. He says we need 50%. This is obviously not going to happen, as populations explode at the same time as land mass disappears (in the rise of the oceans), and less of what’s left is habitable. The book ends very weakly with a plea: Do no further harm to the biosphere.David Wineberg

Edward O. Wilson’s writing never ceases to amaze me. I love the way he sets up a statement and then takes the reader on an adventure through it to arrive at the point. Every high school and college writing class should use Half-Earth or any of his previous books as examples of how to do great writing. His sentences are exquisitely and eloquently expressed. His depth of knowledge is as vast as the universe and he imparts it with such clarity wisdom. One of his most profound quotable quotes is right up front in the Prologue: “To strive against odds on behalf of all of life would be humanity at its most noble.” Sadly, his constant and accurate warnings about how destroying Earth’s biological diversity will eventually also destroy humanities ability to survive are being ignored. This book should be included in a time capsule that should only be opened during the “end days” of human existence. It will serve as the ultimate, I told you so.If there were a 25-star book rating, I would give Half-Earth a solid twenty-five stars.

I highly recommend this book! I was pleasantly surprised at how readable Edward O. Wilson made this rather complex subject matter. Half - Earth can be enjoyed by a variety of readers. It is an informative book for both casual conservationists and more involved activists. I greatly appreciated the level of detail and had a difficult time putting it down. I read 98% of it on a Sunday afternoon before saving the ending for bedtime. While it is a very serious look at the problems of global warming and man made pollution it also offers sensible solutions and hope for our dear planet.

Is E.O just getting old? Is he just getting greedy? Did he forget to proofread? There are literally sentences and paragraphs that directly contradict prior statements, even within the same page. He uses ecological terms that the layman may not know, and doesn't bother to define them until after he's been using them for several chapters.I also couldn't tell who his target audience was. If it's a skeptical public, he isn't about to convince anyone of anything. Maybe a handful somehow don't already agree that humans can be bad news for wildlife, but the ones that don't aren't going to be persuaded by a book that reads like a panicked stream of consciousness. If it's fellow scientists, (I'm in this camp) he isn't telling us anything we don't already know. Honestly, his main purpose through most of the book seems to be to refute the so-called "Anthropocentrists" that contend that landscapes should be useful to man, and that there are no really wild places left. He's not necessarily wrong...that's not a great point of view if you apply it to all landscapes everywhere, but these "Anthropocentrists" seem to be a bit of a straw man, lacking overall influence, and generally constituting a much smaller threat to global biodiversity than almost any other aspect of modern civilization. His big plan (SPOILER ALERT) is literally just conserving half of the earth's landmass for wildlife, and only the last chapter really addresses the logistics of that "half-earth solution" at all. And by addresses, I mean he simply suggests that better computers and biotechnology, and educating women so they don't have as many children, will magically make everything ok. Meanwhile, his contention that all we need to do to ensure people can enjoy all that preserved space is have "a thousand of so high definition cameras" to broadcast wilderness to our homes is just laughable.Yes, the biosphere is clearly under imminent threat, and there are a lot of things all of us can do to help. Purchasing (and reading) this book are not among them.

Review

"With March, Congressman John Lewis takes us behind the scenes of some of the most pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement. In graphic novel form, his first-hand account makes these historic events both accessible and relevant to an entire new generation of Americans." - LeVar Burton"A must-read monument... As Rep. Lewis continues to carry the civil-rights flame, this graphic achievement is a firsthand beacon that burns ever relevant today." - The Washington Post"This memoir puts a human face on a struggle that many students will primarily know from textbooks... Visually stunning, the black-and-white illustrations convey the emotions of this turbulent time... This insider's view of the civil rights movement should be required reading for young and old; not to be missed." - School Library Journal (starred review)"Heroism and steadiness of purpose continue to light up Lewis's frank, harrowing account of the civil rights movement's climactic days... Powell's dark, monochrome ink-and-wash scenes add further drama to already-dramatic events." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

It's not a quick read (that is a good thing). It is packed with details about from the Civil Rights movement of the early 1960's. John Lewis is the focal point, but it covers some of Dr. King's work, the Freedom Rides and a lot of the work performed by the SNCC. The artwork does a wonderful job portraying the scenes, including the stores, cars, streets and furniture. The art also conveys the emotions of the characters (on all sides) quite well.It is being advertised as a teaching tool for young people. That is true, and it can be very effective. I am a 38 year old professional who majored in history and teaches social work at Rutgers. I learned a ton from this.

Wow, this book is just stunning both with its graphics and its message. In Book Two, we are now in the "heart" of the peaceful protests. Those who are running the restaurants and movie theaters have decided that they're going to escalate. Not only do they just call in the cops. They try to poison the peaceful occupiers. Lawyers who simply walk into a police station to check on their client are brutally beaten by the police. Buses are set on fire. People out walking are shot and killed. It is staggering the open level of anger that erupts - and again I point out that the protesters were **peaceful**. The protesters don't even fight back! They lay there, passive, and the locals angrily stomped on and brutalized them. It is a quite heart-rending commentary on the cruelty within some people to do those sorts of actions to another human being. And it wasn't that long ago. It's also fair to say that there are clearly some people left who still have that hatred within them, as countless dash-cam and cellphone video have proven. Hopefully overall as a society we find it much more a horrific outlier and not "just the way things are."I love the interweaving between the Obama inauguration and the events of the past that people had to survive (and some did not). It brings even more power to the message. And I greatly admire the style and nature of the graphics. I think they perfectly bring to life the darkness but also the optimism of what was happening.Well recommended. A must-read.

My husband has been reading this series to our 8 year old son and they really enjoy them. It is a fantastically written book for curious children's minds and evokes good conversations that should be had in this day and age with our children. Now, more than ever it is important to remember where our country has come from and not forget that it has been a fight all the way. We don't want history to slide back and these candid conversations to next generations can open up minds and instill a desire for unity. John Lewis is a truly remarkable person of our times and his writings are a must read for children and adults, alike.

I bought this series for my niece who is starting her first year as an English teacher in Southern Illinois because she's building a library in her classroom. She was almost rhapsodic. She says that the format - the writing and the art - offers great insight to young people with widely varying reading skills and social backgrounds. Probably more importantly, it provides them with an historic perspective they might not respond to at all if it were presented in another format or medium.

I had to get this book for a college class on modern American history that I had to write an essay for. The fact that it is a graphic novel makes it so much easier to read. I read this book in a day and it was great (consider my other sources nearly put me to sleep).

... are a gift.As LeVar Burton says, "With MARCH, Congressman John Lewis takes us behind the scenes of some of the most pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement in graphic novel form, his first-hand account makes these historic events both accessible and relevant to an entire new generation of Americans."I would add - and reminds us all how much remains to be done.

March: Book Two by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and artist Nate Powell is the second part of John Lewis’ graphic memoir that shifts from the Civil Rights movement in 1960-63 to 2009 when President Barack Obama is inaugurated — the first black President of the United States. The backdrop helps to frame the entire movement and its struggle — a struggle that continues to this day as discrimination continues, though in more camouflaged ways.Read the full review[...]

March: Book Two continues the wonderful work began in Book One. I love the use of the graphic novel to tell Mr. Lewis's story. I can't wait for Book Three to come out. I truly hope that there are history teachers out there that began to use these works in their classrooms. I think that students would benefit learning about the civil rights movement in a new way.

American heroes are becoming harder and harder to find. Here is the story of Congressman John Lewis as a courageous young man in the Civil Rights Movement. The story is as important today as it was a half century ago. It is an American Classic.

It's hard to put into words how I feel about this book. I've followed Mr. Still's and Leah's journey for a while now, so I couldn't wait to read the story of their journey through Leah's diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and remission. This book did not disappoint. Certain parts gutted me... like the moment he followed his gut feeling and turned around at an intersection to go meet Leah and her grandmother at IHOP because Leah wasn't feeling well, or the moment he's told about the cancer diagnosis, and going to tell his family. Or the moment he's told he'd been cut from the Bengal's roster. There are funny moments, like when Leah tells it like it is, like when she tells him that of course she knows what a flower girl is (and who doesn't?!). And there are inspirational moments, like where Devon finds it within himself to make a situation better, like when to make Leah feel better about the possibility of losing her hair, he convinces her that bald is beautiful, because he's bald and beautiful, so they shave her head right then so they can be the same...and then his mom does the same! And when he asks God to help him help Leah feel better about surgery and God answers when it comes to him to show her his scars from his surgeries (all that he'd been through with the injuries and surgeries prepared him so he could help her), and the fist bump and game face the day of the surgery. Devon's journey through life and his career, his faith in God, helped him find the inner strength and knowledge to help his daughter through everything she went through, helped her overcome and beat cancer. This is definitely a book that I'll turn to time and again, that will soon be dog-eared with all the leafing through it.

This book puts everything in perspective and shows all the struggles Devon and Leah has been through. It is a book that I'll definitely read over and over again it hit close to home about the part with Leah not enjoying IHOP and he instantly knew something was wrong. On may 31st we took our daughter to IHOP and she wasn't having it and we just blew it off after all she was only 17 months. Then just like in Devon's story June 2nd 2014 our life also changed for ever. Our daughter had to be admitted to the hospital for what ended up being a bowel obstruction due to an NF 1 tumor she had to have a 5 week stay. There was times when we wanted to give up and while my daughter's journey isn't over. This book now has taught us to never give up the game and to keep fighting. She is only 6 but she is so proud of her scars and how far she has came. This book will always have a special place in our hearts. We have been following Devon on Instagram for a few years now and keeping them in our prayers at night. Thank you Devon and Leah for never giving up and being an inspirational to the world and our family!

I don’t even know how to find the words to put my feelings into sufficient enough words. The Love, the lessons about perseverance, faith, overcoming adversity, and yes staying in the fight when life throws you into a tailspin is evident throughput this book. Even though I followed Leah’s journey, it was an interview I saw of Devon Still on YouTube which helped me to stay in the fight for my own life. I didn’t experience anything like cancer, but I was at the lowest point in my life that Mr. Devon Still came into my life in a different way, and he’s been inspiring me since... This book is highly recommended for everyone because we all experience some type of adversity in our lives. Blessings to the Still family and all those who need a pick-me-up to stay in the game no matter what you’re facing... A MUST READ!!!

I’ve been following you since Leah diagnosis with cancer. What you have shown us is your faith in God. No, it wasn’t easy and neither was the battle but regardless to what was put before you, you trusted God. Through your book, you made it personable, you made it to where we all can relate and showed us that IT TAKES FAITH! Thank you for sharing your life with us. Even though we may not understand the plays and you had some unnecessary roughness but with God as your coach, you were guaranteed to be champions #LeahStrong... One of my favorites from the takeaways: Sometimes in life you have to be willing to experience pain so that the people you love don’t hurt anymore. (80)

I ordered this book and it came Friday. I was so excited and I’m looking forward to read a book this week. To me personally make me feel I know I will enjoy this book about what Devon and his precious daughter Leah have been going through their journey.

Today Show's Hoda featured Devon and daughter Leah. Since my friend's grandson has been undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma, I ordered the book. It is so much more than a chronicle of disease. His memoir encompasses growing up in the projects with the support of both parents, commitment to football from teenage years to a professional career, and his determination to keep going despite serious setbacks. If you're a football fan, reading this book is a wonderful way to extend the season.

I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have come across this beautiful family. This book puts everything in perspective. as a cancer patient myself, I found so much comfort and push to keep on fighting because if Leah being a baby could do it, I have to keep fighting and know that there’s a greater purpose for me. I have a new found admiration and love for Devon, Asha and Leah! Devon thank you from the bottom of my heart because this book spoke to me in levels I never imagined it would when I bought it!! May God continue to bless your beautiful and humble family!

I have followed this story since the first post on instagram. This book is about growth, understanding, devotion, love, staying strong, believing, family, support, fighting and staying true. This book will lift you up, make you believe, give you perspective, make you cry, laugh and feel proud. The emotions just take over on each line and page. Thank you to the Still family for sharing with the world and for allowing us to follow this journey of strength and fight. Congrats to you all and much respect. To the queen of selfies, bless you always Leah you are a star.
