I was very disappointed in this book. While it may be clear (which is debatable), it is definitely not simple. I wanted to use it for nursing students in Bangkok, Thailand but the English used is an extremely high level. NOT simple. The title is very misleading.It is definitely not useful for teaching ESL/ESP students in Thailand.

I saw this book for the first time in a Hungarian hospital at the nurses' station. I borrowed it for a cursory review and then purchased a copy. Our ESL instructor went through it as did I. We both agreed it is the book of choice for this type of training. We've since Begun to use this book exclusively along with some additional learning tools and homework exercises to train staff nurses at medical tourism hospitals and clinics through Mercury Advisory Group.The book is well-developed, organized, and skills develop and compound from previous curricula. Use for those who have minimum basic English, or offer the pre-requisite course first.. Easily divide the Medical English training course into two sections, levels1 & 2, with this book (45 hours instruction over three weeks time for each level) for good results.

Just like what the cover says: "clear and simple ", it is a good book to follow especially for ESL student. It is easy to learn and build a solid foundation for medical English.

As an instructor, I was excited to find this product to use in my classroom but soon realized that it was only half the resource that I thought it was. Actually, a little less than half.To start, it is full of errors! Word pronunciation errors made worse by the employ of a guide completely unknown not only to myself but each and every student I have taught. For the exercises that have answers included in the Answer Key, some of the answers are incorrect and way too many have "Answers will vary" which provides ESL students studying on their own absolutely no help whatsoever.There are other oddities including exercises instructing students to use the box below, only to have a completely different exercise start with the "box below" being somewhere on the next page or a few pages after.Listening exercises are not exercises at all. Instructing students to listen to the radio serves no purpose as there is no check of their comprehension or understanding. Some of the links that have been included for Youtube are broken, and as mentioned previously there is no way to accurately check the Writing exercises.This book could easily be printed on half the pages with all the ridiculous material left out. The author should demand her money back from her editor for her extremely poor and embarassing editing skills. There are grammar exercises that are better suited for those struggling with Elementary English skills (WH-questions as well as past/present tense) mixed in with academic papers (requiring an Academic IELTS level of +7.0). The author seems to have a split personality, both writing a textbook for readers of completely different learning levels.Are there some redeeming qualities to this textbook? Yes, there is appropriate relevance to the Canadian healthcare system as well as Nursing culture. Some of the more casual terms (what your patient says vs medical terminology) is also beneficial.Overall though, this text is extremely substandard and I eagerly await a textbook oriented towards Nursing in Canada to be published that is professional and properly edited, to put my students and I out of our misery.

The author is Donal Miller. A good review of the ghost towns in Montana. One thing that I did not like was that it looks like this might be a different book then the other one (Similar name, green cover) offered by Donald Miller just by looking at the cover, author, and Amazon. BEWARE! These books are identical or near identical. I am not able to see a difference between the material simply by looking through both of them (other than the published dates). Since neither was expensive I kept both but unless you want two copies you can save some money and just pick one.

The author and his daughter (who put out this "new" which doesn't seem to have updated any information from the nearly four decade-old original) obviously love ghost towns. They also seem to fear that people will vandalize, rob, or destroy these ghost towns. It's my feeling that such miscreants wouldn't go to such great lengths as to purchasing/checking out this book just so they could go vandalize something. Why provide such tantalizingly great information and then not give hardly a clue as to where these towns exist? Obviously the original author didn't have the internet back in the 1970's but his daughter does now. Does she realize that there are entire websites dedicated to locating (and preserving) these towns, even the one they want to keep secret by calling it "Montana Mystery Town"?I had hoped to find a guide to the many ghost towns in the state I live in and love. I now have great information on each town, but have to go to a secondary source to locate them if I want to visit them.

I knew this book was 30 plus years old but some of the ghost towns have degraded even more than I would have guessed. Also, the directions to some of the sites is about 30 years out of date as well. It would be nice to have someone update the content and include actual GPS data and be less secretive about the towns.

this is a good book. it names a lot of the ghost towns of Montana. where they are and how to get to them. it would be handy to have the large Gazette map book to see where you are going. good information on the ghost towns and what they are near and what they were before becoming a ghost town. good book to have if you like to explore ghost towns

This book has been very helpful in planning some family vacations for a hobby. The pictures assist in the type of things to see and also telling if it is public or private has saved numerous mile on the car. If you never get to go see the towns it is still very much worth the read

The photos really stand out to show what an incredibly hard life these early homesteaders, miners, and their families must have encountered. You do need a state map to get a general idea where many of these ghost towns were/area.

Gr. 9^-12. Anyone who thinks that "inner city" and "Mother Goose" are incompatible hasn't read a good collection of the rhymes to a child at bedtime and wondered, "Maybe I should skip this one . . ." These traditional rhymes have been violent from the beginning, and their origins often lay in social commentary. The Inner City Mother Goose makes no pretense of appealing to children. Someday, perhaps, the rhymes' biting, ironic commentary will be so far removed from reality that they become nonsense, but that day seems no closer than it was 27 years ago when the first edition of The Inner City Mother Goose was published as an adult book. The 1970 Booklist review called its verse "lacerating little rhymes, worlds removed in mood and content from the traditional Mother Goose poems." Most of the verses were illustrated with striking, gritty black-and-white photographs.Now published as a young adult book, the new edition includes a number of poems written after the first. It also omits several from the original book. Acrylic paintings by Caldecott-winner David Diaz illustrate 10 of the verses. Although the more sophisticated art in the first edition may actually have greater appeal to young adults, Diaz's small, intense paintings create portraits rich in composition, color, and gesture. The images, almost mythic in their sense of representing more than individual people, seem to move with the rhythm of the verse.No matter which illustrations the reader prefers, the power is in the poetry. As in any collection, some of the poems are better than others. As in any parody, knowledge of the original adds greatly to a reading of the verses. Still, the poems come together, uneven but undeniably powerful. They make their statements in different ways, with different tones, all contributing to a chorus that comes through loud and clear. When they first appeared, these poems sounded modern in spite of their nursery rhyme inspiration. They still do.Merriam's introduction to the second edition (1982) is reprinted here. In it, Merriam comments that the book became "just about the most banned book in the country," with most of the criticism centering on one vulgar word, though broadening into more general charges that seemed to confuse cause and effect. Some of the poems concern aspects of our society, such as violence, racism, and corruption, that most of us prefer to leave in darkness. Instead, the poetry occasionally flashes like summer lightning, suddenly illuminating what we would rather not see and exposing our fears in its swift, cold light.Whatever its history, and wherever librarians choose to shelve it, this book belongs in libraries: not because it mimics Mother Goose, not because it stirs controversy, but because it speaks with such clarity and in such an unexpected form. My mom always read nursery rhymes and other stories to me, but none like this! I still have the books she read me when I was a toddler, and was glad to acquire this one as an adult! Some of the ones in this book relate to society today, with mature themes, much like the nursery rhymes of old--I didn't know their meaning until I was a teenager in high school! Anyway, this is a great collection with great art/pictures of brown or black people...

Glad to be able to get this book. It was very controversial in the 60's and has been very hard to get.

Great book in great shape.

I first heard Eve Merriam's "The Inner City Mother Goose" in 1971, when it was part of the Oral Interpretation performed by Richard Quezada that won the New Mexico State Speech contest. Rick had a wonderful deep voice, the sort that radio DJs would die for, and he made these poems really come alive. Today people get all excited by politically correct fairy tales, but for our generation it was Merriam turning nursery rhymes on their head to reflect the realities of the urban ghetto that were a sign of the times. These are not parodies, but telling satires that take beloved nursery rhymes as their point of departure. Most of the time her starting points are perfectly clear, as with "Simple Simon, "Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Quick," and "If." Besides, not all of her reference points are nursery rhymes, because you will also see the echoes of Christmas carols (e.g., "Twelve Rooftops Leaping"). Other poems simply are in the general style of children's rhymes, albeit with more serious intent (but then remember, "Ring Around the Rosie" was about the Black Death).The language of some of these poems was shocking back in 1969, but, of course, today these words would not cause a ripple on a rap album. However, what is important is that here we are decades later and do any of us doubt that the world of which this poems speak still exists? This volume contains the text of the 1982 expanded edition, with a new introduction by poet Nikki Giovanni, and ten full-color paintings by David Diaz. Final Note: You know, the "real" Mother Goose (Elizabeth Vergoose) is buried in Boston's Old Granary Burial Ground, along with the victims of the Boston Massacre, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere. Given her final resting place is amongst the patriots of the American Revolution, no, I do not believe she is spinning in her grave over Merriam's poems.

While the language of Eve Merriam's Inner City Mother Goose seems shocking at first glace, it is a very accurate depiction of the happenings in the inner city. As a future educator, I firmly believe that the words in this book can be used to reach these less fortunate children far better than the book's counterpart. Not only did Merriam's book create contoversy, but it created a bridge for those who live in that world to those who have not experienced it. The language is depictive of the society, and Diaz's illustrations and use of color illuminate the child's eye view of their world. This book is a required reading for any person who deals with children from this background in order to not only gain a better understanding of the child, but of your own world.

I enjoyed and recommend this book because Merriam writes from the point of veiw of a person living in the situation, not of one looking down on it. She portrayed things the way they were then, and sadly, the way they are now.
