I am always a sucker for stories with alternate worlds and mysterious heroes, but it wasn't Asher who caught my attention in this story, it was Reggie.Without giving too much away, the book throws us right into the deep end with a conversation between the two characters. Reggie has a power and Asher knows about it, and Reggie doesn't really know who this guy is. And neither do we. By the end everyone had believable motivations and were mostly likable, but the journey for Reggie being someone who just wants to know what's going on to someone comfortable with herself is very well done. My favorite aspect of her characters though, what I found most endearing, was her level of trust in the people around her. I personally wouldn't have trusted any of these people, and I certainly wouldn't have been down to explore exciting new opportunities with a weird biker guy who doesn't even introduce himself at first. But for Reggie, all of her decisions make sense given her character, and I enjoyed seeing where she went with it.The ending is a bit of cliffhanger but given that the second book is already available this isn't something to worry about.

I enjoyed reading this. I'm not a fan of series books but will read a trilogy, and I am looking forward to the next book. The book moved pretty fast. Lots of action, I thought the story brought the characters together in a interesting way. A new world, elfs, changelings, mages good and bad. The relationship between Reggie and Asher developed pretty fast I knew they would end up together but not as fast as it did. I did liked the story and hope the next book moves them forward.

I generally do not read this genre of books, but found this one fascinating. Rebecca Jaycox writes the characters well and helps us understand the agonizing pain that Reggie, a confused teenager with an alcoholic mother, a dead father and a sudden realization that there is more to her own story than she realizes, is dealing with. The story takes the reader on one adventure after another and I felt like I was in nearly every type of scenario from The Wizard of Oz to Harry Potter to Star Wars to Indiana Jones. I couldn't choose just one because there is such a wonderful mixture of all of them. I would have absolutely given this a five star rating but I didn't get quite the closure I was looking for. I believe that is because there will be a sequel and I look forward to reading that when it comes out. Job well done, Ms. Jaycox!

I feel like this book has a split personality & isn’t sure which audience it’s meant for. Parts seem Y/A, parts seem N/A, parts seem adult. I definitely wouldn’t recommend for Y/A due to the sexual references (though it’s not super descriptive, it’s still referenced multiple times), or the graphic violence. That being said, why do some parts feel so geared for Y/A? I’m not even sure what age Reggie is, since it never says in the story, or even refers to what grade she is in high school to guess, I can only assume between 16 to 18 because she’s in high school. The characters seem to be a little flat, except for the changeling, Brwyn. He was the most interesting character in the whole book in my opinion. Reggie came across to trusting & naive for a strong heroine, which also makes me question her age. She also seemed too easily to accept her magic, learning with limited help, never questioning what’s going on around her or who to to trust or question, never having a melt down over the whole thing. She never gave me the feeling that her abilities could defeat anyone even with help either. She gets upset over killing the enemy soldiers, but can’t bring herself to kill the enemy mage/leader. To much contradictory stuff going on. Asher was ok for a Hero, but I would have liked more interaction between Asher & Reggie, before they became intimate (not that I’m thrilled that a 16 to 18 year old heroine is being portrayed as intimate in the story with the hero that I believe was mentioned as about 19 or 20) or even proclaiming love for each other. I feel that the sexually active heroines in books or movies that N/A readers would read should be atleast 18 (legal adults)! Y/A readers shouldn’t be reading that stuff yet, it’s a bad example for them. I felt their sex actually hurt the story line, the story would have been better with just kissing between them due to her age & inexperience, with no mention of love. I’m a 56 year old grandmother & read erotic as well as Y/A but I don’t like the mixed signals from this book. The world building kind of was learned as Reggie learned, but there were some points that were glossed over & other points that were repetitive. The flow was decent, & it held my interest enough to stay up late to finish the book. It did end on a cliff-hanger, only thing that book this accomplished was finally getting her to Rhys & the resistance fighters, & that Asher now is no longer a slave to the evil mage. This seemed like 2 steps forward to every 4 steps backward in the plot. To many pages (Amazon says 314) for what seems like so little accomplishment to the tale, I needed more than this to keep me reading a series. Not sure I would want to pay for the next book in the series, & I’m not even sure how many more books there will be in the series.

There was never a dull moment in this book, and I can't wait to read the sequel. This book tells the story of Reggie, a teen girl who recently discovers she has powers and is part of an "other" world. Up to this point in her life, she was under the impression she was normal.I think the character development in this book was excellent. I felt we really got to know Reggie, her mother, her friend John, and the citizens of the Other. The pace was quick. The story was very imaginative and full of detail. The description of The Other was very vivid.I read a lot of young adult science fiction/fantasy, and for a first-time novelist, Rebecca Jaycox really has made her mark on this genre.

I enjoyed the story in this book. This story is about Reggie and her inheritance from her father, from another world. You go from one world into the other seamlessly. It was exciting and it flowed. It flowed along seemingly effortlessly until it ended. That is the problem and why I only gave it 4 stars. It ended so abruptly that I started reading the author page not realizing it was done! There was no warning, no segue, ...nothing. It’s like the author took a single book and tore it in half so she would have two book. I hate that. But, I will read the next one because I need to know what happened. 😊
